Judging Guidelines

The work will be judged over four scoring categories with a possible total score of 20 points. Within each category a 1 is the lowest score and a 5 the highest. * Exception: If an entrant does not provide documentation a judge can score a zero for that category. The cumulative total from all the judging teams will determine the final scores.

Categories are:

Craftsmanship /Methods
Accuracy to Period/Materials
Documentation
Overall Impression

Each entrant is to be evaluated on the merits of their own work and not in comparison to other items entered. Evaluations will be based on the level of information, attempt, and process of those materials/methods used during a given historical period to create the entries.

General scoring guidelines:

1 = Little understanding of period techniques and materials, information provided and skill needed to produce the items.

2= Some understanding of period techniques and materials, information provided and skill needed to produce the items.

3 = Average understanding of period techniques and materials, information provided and skill needed to produce the items.

4 = High/above understanding of period techniques and materials, information provided and skill needed to produce the items.

5 = Exceptionally high levelunderstanding of period techniques and materials, information provided and skill needed to produce the items.

Some things that will be considered by the judges:

  • Has the entry been produced in a period manner or have modern mechanical processes/ modern techniques and materials been used? If so how much of the item/s have been created using those modern materials or techniques?
  • Has the reason for those modern choices been explained and does the entrant have an understanding of how it would have been produced in period even if they produced their entry in a non-period way? (If a period process or material is harmful/ toxic and a modern substitute used, or if a material is excessively expensive, ie. real jewels or gold points will not be deducted as long as the entrant understands what would have been used in period.)
  • How have period methods/techniques have been used to achieve an entry with only reasonable variation from the medieval procedure?
